TERRE HAUTE — Two years ago, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Terre Haute staged its first Print to Apparel event. Artists, non-artists, young, old, men and women submitted more than 50 entries. Submissions included baby doll clothes, skirts, shoes, hats, vests, pants, a bustier and a 5-foot full-length gown complete with ruffles. All items were made from newspapers. Due to overwhelming popularity, the group is hosting a second opportunity to let one’s creativity shine.

Organizers are seeking entries from the community. Artists and amateurs alike are invited to submit handmade works of “wearable art.” The entries must meet the following criteria. Each piece submitted must:

• be made “almost” entirely of newspaper (at least 85 percent);

• have the capability to be displayed on a typical clothes hanger or to stand on its own on the floor, table or pedestal;

• be constructed in a way that it resembles wearable art. It doesn’t have to be built in a manner that will enable it to literally be worn although, that too is fun; and

• be fashioned using glue and other adhesives or by sewing newspaper pieces together. They may be embellished with paint, fabric, beads, buttons and other items that make the work more interesting.

There is a $5 entry fee per piece. (No more than three pieces may be submitted per person.) Drop off the entry fee and wearable item from 1 to 4 p.m. May 15 to First Unitarian Universalist Congregation at 1875 Fruitridge Ave.

The idea is to reuse newspaper and to be creative in the endeavor. The Print to Apparel project is all about having fun, making art, and then, coming together for an exhibit reception starting at 6 p.m. on May 21.

The reception is free and open to the public. Voting for the People’s Choice Award opens at 6 and closes at 7. Ballots will be counted and the winner will be announced at 7:15.

A dinner will be served at 7:15. All who submit an entry will receive dinner for free on Saturday night. (Children eat for free.) For more details contact Carolyn at uuputer@yahoo.com or call (812) 232-1193.
