TERRE HAUTE — The 67th annual Wabash Valley Juried Exhibition opens Saturday and runs through Aug. 27 at the Swope Art Museum in downtown Terre Haute. The public reception will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday. The awards will be presented at 4 p.m., followed by a party.

Guests can enjoy hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and the opportunity to mingle with the artists. The opening reception is free as is admission to the galleries.

This historical annual exhibition showcases the marvelous diversity of artistic talent from this region. With no restrictions on medium or style everyone is sure to find something to delight their senses.

One of the oldest juried exhibitions in Indiana, the Annual Wabash Valley accepts up to three submissions, from artists living within Indiana and the four states on its borders.

This year, 115 artists submitted 320 works of art for consideration. Selections for the exhibition are chosen by an impartial judge working from digital images. This year the judge selected 65 works of art representing 41 artists from Indiana and Illinois and Kentucky. For accuracy the judge selects juror’s awards in person after the works of art have been delivered to the Museum. Fourteen sponsors donated juror’s awards and four sponsors selected purchase awards.

This year’s distinguished juror is Janie Welker curator at the University of Kentucky Art Museum, Lexington, and formerly of the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington, N.Y., and the International Center of Photography in New York.

“Making selections of art from digital images is always a dicey affair, and so it is truly a joy when the work itself exhibits even more presence, more verve, more technical skill, and more humor than was evident on a computer screen. That is certainly the case with the 67th Annual Wabash Valley Juried Exhibition,” Welker said.

In addition to the awards listed below, the People’s Choice Award sponsored by the Alliance of the Swope Art Museum, will be selected by visitor ballots. The votes will be tallied and the award will be announced at the close of the exhibition.
