SULLIVAN — The exhibit “Journey to China — The Art of Don Monroe,” based on the artist’s studies while on a three-week tour, will be featured May 1 through 28 in The Gallery on Main at 101 S. Main St. in Sullivan.

“China is a rapidly changing place, but a place with a long and rich cultural history. One can still see in parts of the country the very old next to the very new. It can be seen in its architecture, culture and everyday life,” Monroe said.

“I have worked off and on on this series of paintings for the last two-and-a-half years, spending one to three months working on each one. While the paintings themselves are each my own imaginative creation, they are representative of the people, places and things I saw and experienced while there. I sincerely hope you will enjoy your Journey to China as seen through my paintings.”

Monroe studied art at Indiana State University but is basically a self-taught traditional realist artist. He primarily works in oil but also does watercolor paintings, and is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society.

His artwork has appeared in juried regional and national art shows all over the United States. His work also has appeared in numerous international shows and has been included in a special International Art Show staged at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Monroe has traveled extensively and has been to many of the world’s major art museums, seeing firsthand the paintings and sculptures of the world’s greatest artists.

Patrons are invited to meet Monroe at artist receptions scheduled 1 to 4 p.m. May 1, noon to 4 p.m. May 7, 5 to 8 p.m. May 20 and 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 28.

The Gallery on Main is on the southeast corner of the square in Sullivan. E-mail galleryonmain@frontier.com for more information.
