Based on an Australian hit about a man and his (uncannily human) dog, “Wilfred” premiered Thursday to 2.6 million total viewers, the highest-ever opening for an FX comedy premiere, according to the Nielsen Co.

Critics were generally positive toward the series, which stars Elijah Wood as a young man who befriends a neighbors dog (played by Jason Gann in a deliberately unconvincing canine costume). On Metacritic, the premiere averaged a score of 66 (out of 100), indicating generally favorable reviews.

“Wilfred” outscored all other FX comedy premieres, including “Lucky” (2.5 million), “Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia” (1.4 million) and “Archer” (1.8 million).

The show also helped its lead-out, the season 2 premiere of “Louie,” the dark comedy with Louis C.K., which delivered 1.6 million viewers, a jump of 42% from its premiere last June.
